J: Just a Gigolo/I Ain’t Got Nobody

Sorry this one is a little late. I got caught up running errands today! But, here it is. . .

“I’m just a gigolo and everywhere I go People know the part, I’m playin'”

I was never a big Van Halen/David Lee Roth fan (I actually preferred  Van Halen with Sammy Hagar. I know. Don’t hate me!), but my sister was. She loved David Lee Roth. I’m pretty sure I still have some of her old Van Halen 45s in my box of records.

This was one of David Lee Roth’s first solo hits. He released this song and his album, Crazy from the Heat, while still lead singer of Van Halen. He and the band parted ways a few months later.

I didn’t realize that this was a mixup by Louis Prima of two older songs, Just a Gigolo (by Irving Caesar) and I Ain’t Got Nobody (by Roger Graham and Spencer Williams). And that all four songs on the album are actually all cover songs.

I hadn’t watched this video, probably since the ’80s. I forgot how funny it was. I loved how he crashed into all of ’80s artists’ videos. The Boy George imitator is too funny. And Billy Idol electrocuting himself. . . Ha! Dave is one crazy guy!

  1. While I did love Van Halen with David Lee Roth, I also preferred them with Sammy Hagar. This song wasn’t one of my favorite David Lee Roth songs, but I loved the video. He always has very entertaining videos – starting with the videos from Van Halen’s 1984 album. My favorite DLR solo songs are Yankee Rose, Going Crazy, and Just Like Paradise.
